In December 2023, our own McCrorey Heights neighborhood Rhonda Covington published her first novel, Under the Circumstances, achieving her long-held aspiration of having her name printed as an author.
Inspired by Family History
Rhonda originally conceived the book idea nearly 30 years ago after the 1994 death of her maternal grandmother, Willanna Carter Galloway Roach. Rediscovering the finished manuscript during the COVID-19 pandemic motivated Rhonda to complete final edits and prepare for publication over the last 2.5 years.
My grandmother’s spirit visited me on the morning of her death, and I spent considerable time that day searching for pictures of her for some reason I did not fathom at the time…my grandmother’s death later rekindled my desire to write again. Her death made me painfully aware that I had no children to whom to pass on the memory and wisdom of this grand lady.
Novel Synopsis
The book follows Angelea Roberts, a successful legislative attorney in Washington, D.C. forced to readjust after returning to her North Carolina hometown. She renegotiated family relationships and a new legal career while facing romantic complications with a former crush and mysterious colleague. Rhonda describes Under the Circumstance as “chick lit” containing universal themes that men will also find enjoyable.
Accomplishment Fueling Inspiration
Rhonda’s authorial achievement, she says, serves as a reminder that one is never too old to accomplish meaningful dreams. She certainly delivered on her own! Her book is now available via Amazon Kindle, Barnes & Noble Press paperback, or directly for $20 per printed copy.
