On August 15, 2022, McCrorey Heights became the 8th historic neighborhood designated by the City of Charlotte. Driven by residents seeking to protect the cultural feel of the community amid encroaching gentrification pressures, this special distinction requires homeowners to gain approval before making external changes.
With overwhelming support, the historic designation now requires that homeowners receive permission prior to initiating projects involving items such as:
- Exterior home renovations
- Landscaping and yard changes
- Tree removal
This list does not include all possible changes requiring approval, and any permits or construction completed before August 15th are grandfathered in. However, any new changes to these properties must have HDC approval.
Some common violations to avoid:
- Replacing original windows and doors that don’t match historical aesthetics
- Adding exterior elements like satellite dishes visible from the street
- Paving over front lawns or doing major hardscaping work
- Remodeling projects that greatly alter the home’s original facade
All homeowners are encouraged to review the Historic District Commission’s website and design standards to understand the guidelines for preserving our community’s look and feel.
Please contact HDC staff before making any exterior changes to ensure the proper approvals are secured.
